What can I say about Pittsburgh? It is the most livable city in America and is beautifully laid out between The Ohio, Monongahela, and Allegheny Rivers. Pittsburgh may be smaller than most major cities, but there still is plenty of upscale shopping, extraordinary dinning, and a decent size gay community there. The city, overall, is pretty accepting of the gay community. You will find many gay couples, transsexuals throughout Pittsburgh, but as far as which areas are more accepting it would depend on the neighborhoods. Some are more accepting than others. Some neighborhoods that would be more accepting would be Shadyside (home of 2 of the most popular gay bars), Oakland (college area), Squirrel Hill, and South Side (where just about ANYTHING goes). Even still, you WILL get people in any areas that do not agree with your lifestyle so you should still be semi-cautious.
Interested in going to gay friendly or gay owned restaurants or cafes? There are several pleasurable ones located throughout the city. Head over to the Regent Square neighborhood and have a bite to eat at the Square Café located on 1137 Braddock Ave. A very enjoyable little restaurant with local artists work hanging along the walls that you may purchase. Sadly, they are only open until 3:00 pm so I suggest getting down there earlier in the day to enjoy what they have to offer. Personally, I recommend their crepes.
In the mood for a great cup of coffee and locally grown food? Then you MUST head to Enrico’s Tazza D’oro and enjoy what has been rated some of the best coffee in Pittsburgh. This quaint little café is located in the Highland Park neighborhood at 1125 N Highland Ave and is very gay friendly and gay owned. The price range at Tazza D’oro is very reasonable, perfect for breakfast and lunch, and free WiFi.
Heading out to enjoy some of the nightlife Pittsburgh has to offer; then eat, drink, and be gay at one of Pittsburgh’s most popular bars 5801 Video Lounge & Café which is located in the Shady Side neighborhood at 5801 Ellsworth Ave. This bar has been around for five years and has recently been remodeled and looks fantastic. They have daily drink specials, a huge outdoor patio that is perfect for those summer nights, and many interesting events taking place there. It can be a BIT hard to have a conversation there with someone because it can get pretty loud, but all and all it’s a great trendy bar in Pittsburgh. If you are in Shady Side checking out 5801 you might as well skip on over to Spin which is across the street. Many would describe Spin as an upscale bar/Lounge, plays some great music, and appeals to a younger crowd of pretty boys.
If you are looking for some bars that would be in the downtown area, then try out Images, located 965 Liberty Ave. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays are karaoke. They have a pretty enjoyable atmosphere, live music, and Go-go dancers on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Now, if you’re looking for some hot naked dancers, Real Luck Café (also known as Lucky’s located at 1519 Penn Ave.) and P-Town (located 4740 Baum Boulevard) are two clubs you should check out. If you’re going to Lucky’s you need to enter at the rear door entrance which is where the patio is (no cover charge). There is a downstairs and an upstairs (which is where the dance floor is and all the naked male dancers from 10:00pm – 2:00am). If you are going there, I suggest spending your time on the 2nd floor (most do). Both Lucky’s and P-Town have many fun events, amazing drinks, a pretty decent size crowd and naked dancers.
Pittsburgh is definitely a diverse kind of city with many ethnic restaurants to check out and an abundance amount of fun and exciting things to do there.
